A team of doctors at the private United Hospital in Dhaka performed a ‘mechanical heart implant’ on the body of a 42-year-old woman on Wednesday, March 2. The operation took four hours.

The total cost including installation of the device is around Rs. According to the World Health Organization, Bangladesh has the highest number of deaths due to heart disease and stroke. But organ transplants have huge complications in the country.

How does the mechanical heart work?
Cardiac surgeon Dr. took part in this surgery. Arif Ahmed Mohiuddin.

He said, “The function of the heart is to keep the blood flowing to the vital organs of the body uninterruptedly. The health of the heart is very important for the health of all the organs of the body.

Simply put, it is a device that pumps blood or circulates blood to the heart. This relaxes the heart and normalizes blood flow to the body. ”
It is battery powered which has to be charged like a mobile phone battery. The device that has been installed in Bangladesh is ‘Heartmate-Three’. Dr. Mohiuddin said, its battery charge is about six to seven hours.

The surgical pump is inserted into the left side below the heart. The device is connected to the heart by a tube. The device pumps with a kind of magnetic force.

Through the leak in the abdomen, it is connected to the battery and monitor on the outside of the body. This part is packed in a bag with straps to carry around all the time. In all, its portable weight is about 1.5 kg.

The monitor lets you know about battery charge and device activity.

But this is not a lasting solution. Transplants are usually needed when the heart is completely crippled. That is the long-term solution. But this device is used when the heart is rapidly deteriorating if the medicine does not work in any way, if a healthy heart is not available or if it is too late to get it.
How long, how healthy to live?
Dr. Arif Ahmed Mohiuddin says, “This model came on the market in 2016. It is one of the latest models. It is difficult to calculate how long you will live. Years. ”

He says he has to stay in the hospital for three to four weeks after having the device surgically implanted. Then it may take about three months for the body to get used to everything. “It’s not like I put in a device and everything went well. It’s a matter of long-term rehabilitation.”

What are the extra precautions to take?
Dr. Mohiuddin said that even after putting the device down, the angry person was given medicine. Medicines to keep the blood thinner are especially important. The person who has the device implanted in his body will be able to return to normal life even if it is not one hundred percent in three or four months.

“He will be able to do normal tasks like going out, shopping, official work. The purpose of this device is to help a heart patient to return to normal life as much as possible. . ”
However, some precautions must be maintained. For example, batteries or monitors cannot be completely submerged in water, swimming cannot be cut. Since the device will be connected through a leak in a part of the body, care must be taken so that there is no injury. Must be clean and tidy.

How long a patient can live a healthy life depends largely on the patient’s physical condition, proper adherence to the doctor’s advice, proper medication, and a balanced diet.

Is there any risk?
Nothing is risk-free. There is a risk of bleeding with any surgery, so be it. Since some parts of the device are outside the body, leaking into the abdomen, they are kept outside, so there is a risk of infection by germs.

The device is placed on the left side of the heart. As a result, the right side of the heart may become weak. Many times strokes can occur. Thrombosis or blood clotting problems can occur.

There may be a problem with the device. In that case, the hospital where the device is installed has a support system in this regard.
